The Low Temperature Resistance Of Lab Glass Sample Vials
As we know, most lab glass sample vials can be kept intact at a temperature of -4℃. At room temperature, short-term storage of test samples does not require any special precautions and can be stored in glass vials containing organic solvents at temperatures as low as -80℃. But, it requires special caps made of polypropylene, as these materials will become more and more brittle when the temperature is lower than 0℃.
Storage sample vials
When using it as a storage vial, the most important thing is to avoid direct sunlight. During storage and thawing, place it on a plastic vial rack. For many liquids, in the process of thawing, especially when the sample contains a large amount of water, it will exert considerable pressure on the closed container and may cause it to rupture. Therefore, when storing liquid samples at low temperatures, the sample cannot fill the entire vial.
At extremely low temperatures, bayonet vials are not recommended. Lab glass sample vials used at low temperatures should have a larger internal volume and a smaller opening, such as screw and transparent crimp top sample vials. When the lab glass sample vials are stored for a long time at low temperatures, it is recommended to crimp and seal or top-fix the screw cap.
Thaw frozen sample vials
We must be extremely careful when dealing with frozen bottles. Under normal circumstances, when glass vials are exposed to an environment with rapid temperature changes, it will crack (especially brown vials).
So don’t put the cold bottle in a warm place, and avoid impact. Putting the bottle on top of a metal object will also increase its possibility of damage. It should be noted that the temperature of the bottle will gradually approach the temperature of the external environment. In addition, when the temperature inside the bottle is not the same as the outside temperature, do not touch or bump it.
Warm frozen sample vials
The glass vials should be allowed to warm up gradually, and the warm lab glass sample vials should avoid sudden changes in temperature. It is not recommended to use a water bath, hot water tank, oven, or other high-temperature heat sources to warm it.
It is most reasonable to defrost lab glass sample vials slowly at room temperature by heat conduction. Lab glass sample vials with a temperature lower than -20℃ should be placed in a refrigerator at -4℃ to 0℃. This can reduce the possibility of damage to the vial.
PTFE/silicone rubber septum
It is used to block items with a temperature lower than -40℃. When the temperature drops to -80℃, the PTFE/silicone rubber septum still maintains a good seal, but it must be noted that the vial cap should not be tightened too much. The cap should be tightened without any significant deformation of the septum. Please note that the temperature range we release for PTFE/silicone rubber septa is above -40℃. This range refers to the temperature at which the water solidifies without destroying the vial.
